A few common questions...

What is a green oak frame?..

Green oak frames are made from unseasoned oak, held together using traditional pegged mortice, tenon, dovetail and other joints. It often forms the major structural part of a building, roof or extension.

How do I buy an oak frame?..

Depending upon whether you have just a rough idea of what you'd like or a detailed design ready to build, we can work with you, your builder, architect or engineer to realise your bespoke oak framed project.

How is an oak frame made?..

Our frames are made in our workshop using mainly traditional specialist hand tools such as chisels, planes and saws, as well as some selected state of the art machine tools to shape and joint the timbers.

How is an oak frame erected?..

A green oak frame can be erected very rapidly indeed as the timbers already shaped in the workshop are simply lifted into place, reassembled and pegged to quickly form a fully self-supporting structure.

Can oak frames be glazed?..

Glazing can be mounted directly within rebates or onto the outer face of a green oak frame, or in casements on or within an oak frame. Methods vary by function, site factors and desired appearance.

How long do oak frames last?..

Oak is a very durable structural wood. There are many oak framed buildings and roofs known to be many, many centuries old. Exposed oak becomes 'silvered' over time as it weathers and matures.

Tools of the Trade

Large framing chisels

Our work is heavily reliant upon the skillful use of tools and measuring equipment.

These range from the kinds of chisels, gouges, planes, saws, string lines and plumb bobs that would be familiar to a carpenter of centuries past, to modern state of the art laser levels, circular saws, drills, beam planers and morticing machines. They each have their place.

Here's a brief look at some of the tools we use day to day in our workshop.
